On this spectacular mostly-road trip, you traverse across the heart of Ecuador, from Quito—a high-altitude city nestled in an Andean valley that was one of UNESCO’s first-ever World Heritage site (designated in 1978)—to end in the south-lying buzzing Peruvian capital.
You’re promised crashing waterfalls, steaming hot-springs, glorious Andean vistas, Amazon wonder, spectacular cities defined by indigenous and colonial architecture and culture. The tour takes in Quito, Banos, Cuenca and Lima, and volcanoes, llamas, great food and lots of pisco sours if you’re inclined.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1 Arrive in Quito. Do a walking tour through a city defined by spectacular Spanish colonial architecture and preserved historic center, with cobble-stoned streets, the Plaza Grande, Archbishop’s Palace, stunning Basilica del Voto Nacional (pictured here), La Compania de Jesus (Church of the Society of Jesus). Optional activities for extra fee can be the famed Otavalo crafts-market on outskirts of Quito, or a Cotopaxi Volcano adventure.
Day 2&3 Amazon Rainforest. Two nights at a jungle ecolodge. You canoe up river, trek in the forest, go tubing if you desire, meet locals, make a chocolate dessert from scratch with highly-valued Ecuadorean cacao.
Day 4&5Â Road trip to Banos. Spend two days in this cracking, active city that lies in the shadow of an active Andean volcano. Explore its markets, thermal baths, and adventure options.
Day 6&7Â Â Road trip to Cuenca. Explore colonial churches and museums, tour the city, shop for a Panama hat, which the city is famed for inventing.
Day 8&9 Fly to Lima, Peru. Stay in Miraflores on the Pacific Coast, enjoy various adventure options on offer—from bike touring Lima to museum tours to paragliding.
