For the past several decades, the island of Cyprus has been divided into a Greek Cypriot south and a Turkish north. While the European Union recognizes the south as the independent Republic of Cyprus and regards it as having de jure sovereignty over the entire island, the Turkish-occupied areas of the north—referred to as the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus by Turkey (and only recognized by Turkey)—remain under Turkish control, and are separated from the south by a United Nations’ buffer zone.
Canadians should know something about this history—Canadian UN peacekeepers have been stationed there for decades, and that’s one of the reasons it’s a safe destination. While the south has some of Europe’s most popular beach resorts, the north sees fewer visitors—aside from those coming from mainland Turkey. This eight-day tour explores the north, with a brief visit to the south, and takes in some of the island’s beautiful scenery and its small communities and historic sites.
Located just 75 kilometres from the Turkish mainland and surrounded by the Eastern Mediterranean Sea—not to mention being known as the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love—Cyprus has long spanned Europe and the Middle East, and this tour contrasts both.
Beginning in the beautiful sun-splashed town of Girne, with its winding alleyways, abandoned 16th-century church and Venetian castle, the tour continues north to Buyuk Konuk and Karpaz, before ending in Gazimagusa on the east coast.
Enjoy a boat trip along the coast, a few dips in warm Mediterranean waters, hikes through small villages, and explorations of historic sites. Indulge in some bread and cheese making, and even a little local firewater tasting. And don’t forget to carry your passport while in Lefkosa—the Turkish half of the capital city of Nicosia—so you can take a stroll across the country’s green line (the border’s checkpoints) into the Republic of Cyprus, before returning to the Turkish north once more.
